Chapter 1164: Crossing the Sea (1)
Not even their mighty Great Barricade could protect them from the Second Breath.
After the death of the Fifthborn, and the resolution provided by the public statement to ease the unrest in the Human territory, people began to come out, resuming back their usual daily activities like before the chaos happened.
Because of that, the economy began its path to recovery with people going back to work.
Everything slowly but surely returned back to normal once again.
Many are still scarred, but their growth path is heading to a better future.
One stark change that happened within the capital city—Ratmawati City was only the rise of entertainment districts across all sectors. People were stressed—and in need of an outlet to let loose of some of that stress.
Knowing that it was inevitable, the government began to invest in those districts.
It would help ease the unrest of millions of people.
Despite still being limited so as to not make the people dependent, they are still required.
Currently, inside the UWO\'s main office, the building is packed again.
People could be seen moving around in a rush as there were endless troubles that came.
Ringing sounds from phone calls, scattered papers, it was total chaos.
At the very top of the building, President Sebrof was sitting on his chair, taking a breather.
He had gotten a moment to clear his mind of problems.
But the minute of peace he had gotten was disturbed once again when the door to his office was suddenly knocked, and his assistant came inside—hugging a pile of papers, "I apologize for disturbing you on your break, president" She apologized, fixing her eyeglass. "But there\'s an important matter that needs your attention"
"No need to apologize, Sarah. Go on," President Sebrof waved his hand with a sigh.
Someone like him couldn\'t afford a minute to rest it seems.
Upon hearing this, Sarah nodded and put the papers gently on President Sebrof\'s desk.
"Just this morning, 31 of our office branches, in the small cities had sent a formal request, for reinforcements. All of them had the same problem, the mutated animals became overbearing and a lot of the cities are on the brink of being wiped out if we don\'t move quickly," Sarah did her best to explain the situation as briefly as possible.
After saying that, she spread the papers that turned out to be all the formal requests.
Each one of them was signed by the associated branch presidents.
Seeing this, President Sebrof massaged his forehead.
He skimmed through each one of them, checking to see if it was really the case.
"Currently, we already deployed the forces from the 25 Golden Crest Families to help supply manpower and also the capable students of reputable universities. But—we are still short on manpower, we can help at most 10 cities today," She continued with a troubled expression.
President Sebrof puts down the papers, "Douglas, where is he?"
"Sir Douglas has already volunteered to help crucial cities" Sarah replied shortly.
Upon hearing this, President Sebrof frowned as there didn\'t seem to be a solution to this.
"So you\'re asking me to choose 10 cities from this bunch?" He asked grimly.
In hesitance, Sarah nodded, "Yes..."
Knowing that this was a big decision to make, she was nervous to answer that question.
Any city that was not picked by President Sebrof would need to fend the mutated animals on their own, practically left to be doomed, and that alone was disturbing to think about. If even Sarah\'s calculation was nearing perfect, then 21 cities would suffer greatly.
Alongside the cities were their people, all would be dying left and right if not wiped out fully.
Faced with such a troublesome situation, President Sebrof took a deep breath.
He needs to make difficult decisions for everyone as always.
Making the wrong decision about Rex, he was hesitant to make hard decisions like this again, but if he didn\'t, then more lives would be lost. Being undecided is a big mistake—and doing it now would collapse the entire United World Organization.
Just as he was about to look through the papers, the door was knocked once again.
This time, a man stepped inside.
He was one of the directors—one of the higher-ups in this office.
Unlike Sarah, he came inside with a bright smile on his face, which was surprising to see.
"President, I received good news," He said excitedly.
Not even giving President Sebrof, any time to respond—he quickly continued, "I received a message from the Clarentium Empire stating that the elemental affinities will be sent in the next couple of days"
"Good! That\'s really good news!" President Sebrof cheered, grateful for the good news.
Some days ago, President Sebrof received a message from Rex himself.
He said that he would be giving elemental affinities to help recover the amount of Awakened, amongst the Humans, and after deep calculations, they settled on a number. As of a moment ago, Awakened seems to be those who have talent.
But Rex changed that fact by providing elemental affinities.
A normal human would turn into an Awakened with that, and that\'s great news for Humanity.
President Sebrof breathed easily, he pressed his forehead against his clasped hands.
\'All of this was only possible because of Giana\'s sacrifice...\' He pondered, grateful for her.
Had she not done what she did, Rex would not have provided his help.
In that scenario, Humanity would be in trouble.
Just before he could savor the good news—a phone call rang in the office, as a holographic notification appeared above a black circle object on the edge of the desk. Seeing the caller, he frowned deeply, not expecting to get a call from this person.
It was the Awakened that he talked with before the reinforcements returned to their homes.
Gilbert is his name, he has a name in the Elpida Alliance.
"Hmm, Gilbert...? Why is he calling?" President Sebrof muttered in confusion.
Even then, he picked up the call knowing that it must be important.
———
About three thousand miles away from the location of Ratmawati City.
Not only the land, but the changes brought by the Second Breath also affected the vast sea.
On top of expanding the water mass of the world, there were some regions of the ocean that were experiencing different kinds of magical phenomena. Some regions had their water color changed from abyssal blue to red, green, or even yellow—while some regions, developed the brutality of nature, whirlpools that made the surrounding water inhabitable.
Even though the mutated animals inside were stronger, they still couldn\'t approach.
Being near these whirlpools would rip their bodies apart.
However, in a calmer region of the sea, a group of mutated dolphins could be seen leaping in and out of the water—going about their daily animal lives. But then they instantly dived deep when they were shadowed by something in the sky.
A large group of silhouettes flew across the clear sky, but they were not birds.
Rather than birds, these silhouettes are a vast host of Angels that soared through the sky.
From a glance, there should be around three hundred or even more of them.
Each of their wings spreads to the sides, casting an expansive shadow over the rolling ocean below. Unlike the radiant beings of lore these majestic Angels bore wings of ashy black, their lower edges tinged with a deep, unsettling crimson.
Under the powerful beat of their wings, the sky seemed to darken.
Anywhere they soared through, trailing behind them were wisps of ashen black energy.
Some form of shadow that danced and dissipated like ethereal smoke.
Clad in somber black robes, and gleaming black armor, these celestial warriors exuded a kind of aura that would shame the mightiest of armies—an unmistakable aura of formidable power that could shake the world.
Moreover, above their heads were halos—amber as gold or glowing with blood red hue.
Crossing the ocean, the rhythm of their movements was almost hypnotic.
Flaps of their wings produced a haunting melody, a prelude to the storm they heralded.
At the very front of the formation—leading this legion of Angels—was an Angel of undeniable authority and ancient power. His halo unlike the others, almost took the shape of a crown. On his back were four magnificent wings that seemed to encompass the entire sky.
He was a figure of awe and dread, the opposite of the Angels depicted in the holy books.
In his grasp, he held a splendid bastard sword the size of his own body.
Its blade was black as night with red accents along its intricate cravings, pulsing like veins of blood. Coupled with the fact, that his face is hidden beneath a black hood, the leading Angel is a menacing sight to behold.
Soon, this legion of Angels met some sort of wall or border built on the ocean.
A robust border made of sturdy materials that span for miles with gigantic turrets the size of five tanks stacked together placed every fifty meters. Upon sensing the arrival of the Angels—the turrets moved automatically, pointing their barrels toward the Angels.
Upon crossing a threshold, the turrets mercilessly began opening fire at the Angels.
Boom!
Boom!
Boom!
Each of their cannons exploded thunderously—firing an armor-piercing shell, the size of an oversized tuna. Ripping through the wind powerfully—these shells, created an orchestra of deadly whistling sounds.
Not to mention, a glowing rune could be seen carved in each of the shells fired.
Seeing this, the leading Angel waved his hand, signaling for the Angels to break formation.
Despite possessing a devastating power, the Angels were at most about even with the speed of the deadly shells, flying towards them. Some of the Angels managed to dodge—but those, who couldn\'t were hit by the shells—eating a massive explosion directly.
"Raargghhh!" One Angel roared in pain as she got hit.
Her entire body took the full brunt of the explosion and was enveloped whole by it.
Even then, she survived the ordeal.
However, before she could sigh in relief after the explosion expanded to its zenith, the sheer essence of the explosion, began to condense back to the exact point—where the Angel had been struck.
It was a gruesome process, with the point where the Angel was struck twisting agonizingly.
She could only grit her teeth as the explosion shrank further.
Finally, the Angel\'s body erupted into a mist of blood—killing her instantly on the spot.
Despite the Angel, was a being of the eighth-rank realm—nearing the ninth-rank realm, she was killed, by one shell from the turrets—displaying the horrendous power the turrets have, capable of killing a powerful Angel in one shot.
Not only her, but the other Angels that got hit also ended up in a mist of blood.
Upon seeing this, the leading Angel frowned, "Aether Venom... they are expecting us"
Clenching his jaw, he pointed his bastard sword to the sky.
Swoosh!
He garnered dark holy energy onto the tip of his sword—activating the rune across the body of the sword—before making a swift cleaving attack. A black energy slash, containing a vast amount of energy burst forth, spanning miles in radius.
Allowing no more of his Angels to die, he aimed to destroy the turrets.
Boom!
Crash!
One energy slash from him decimated dozens of turrets, piercing their barriers easily.
Following the leading Angel\'s lead—the other Angels also closed the distance quickly and did the same thing, aiming to destroy the annoying turrets. Under the constant barrage, from the Angels, the turrets were beginning to be overwhelmed by them.
Just like that, the turrets were broken under the constant assault one by one.
However, the situation didn\'t stop escalating from there.
Rumble!!
Suddenly, the place was shaken by the rumbling sound of engines—booming the area.
Upon hearing this, the leading Angel looked up and saw a massive ship.
In the next second, this massive ship that was blocking the sun lowered and let loose dozens of small airships, that came down like starfalls. Each one of them loomed above the legion of Angels, aiming their high-tech weapons at them.
Before the airships fired, the one at the center had its airlock opened.
Coming out of that airship was a woman donned in a baby blue and white commander outfit.
As she slowly descended—eight slender devices emerged from her back, each resembling a gun and all aimed at the leader of the Angels. Her presence was so formidable it could cause rifts and churn the ocean into vicious tides.
Even the legion of Angels had a hard time flying under her mighty presence.
Nobody would mistake her—Nerissa Aqualine Morgalyx, one of the most powerful Awakened in Khupia City, one of the major cities left standing. She was the current sea admiral, and the Supreme Marquess of the Elpida Alliance.
Possessing three elemental affinities, with two of them being in the ninth-rank realm, she\'s a figure who none should mess with. Gazing down at the legion of Angels in contempt, Nerissa opened her mouth, "We expected your movements to expand, but I pity you Angels who dare to venture to my territory. Nobody passed this border without my permission."
"Prepare to be granted death. Be honored, for all of you, will die by my hands..."
